Exit Strategies (a bloodletting), a videopoem chapbook

When David Tomaloff and I started working together last year, one of the first things I asked him was "What about a videopoem-chapbook? Hasn't been done I think. Let that idea sizzle and stew for a while..."

David's reply on that:
"One more quick thing for you to think about: You mentioned a chapbook and told me to think about it. I wanted to tell you I liked the idea. I have a chap on Gold Wake Press that came out in June. It came to mind immediately when you mentioned the idea. It's a series of 6 prose poems I think are begging for videos. Give it a read if you have time; I'd LOVE to have you consider making it into series."

I read 'Exit Strategies' and then I read them again, and again...
They were exactly what I had in mind. While working on 'PROOF' (a triptych) I also started preparing the work on 'Exit Strategies'.

One of the first things I wanted for this project was some 'theme music'. I wanted to make six different video's with the same feel or atmosphere and 'a theme' would be the mortar between the six.

Meanwhile David started reading and recording the poems.
Great readings and recordings, I might add. In the meantime I was working on images, footage for the whole concept.
I gave the six poems different 'working titles' to set a basic feel. In the end I decided to keep the titles (Entry, Wave, Drag, Asylum, Attic and Sum)

Between the different other projects we worked on, David kept on sending in recordings and I kept editing and filming the video's.

The work is done. I'm going to release all six, one by one, in the next weeks. After that they will be published as a complete series.

The first one in line is
 Exit Strategies I

{I} HOT KNIVES WILL MELT INTO THE EMPIRES OF FLESH ON THE
CONTINENTS OF THEIR SOFT, SUPPLE THROATS. You can stay up all night
burning powders in their names, but they will come for you all the same. The dawn, to
them, it does not exist. You are never alone in the being alone, and the wolves will open
up, show you the light if you let them. Let them, you will not. You will hold knives over
flame and count beats between the calls of crickets. Hold fast. Steady now, and breathe. A
circular motion. The turning of a screw. A radio going silent in the warehouse of a mind. A
temple. A refinery. A steelhead. A trap. The judge and the judged, both waiting for the
click.

Manual: How to mourn

How to mourn
Write his or her name in the snow, get a comfortable chair and watch how it melts: the letters expanding, becoming illegible and finally disappearing into the earth.
Spend time—the only form of currency the dead still honor.
Find the perfect slab of polished granite and release it into its native habitat.
Every year on the anniversary of your loss, take out a small ad in your local paper. Let it remain blank—an oasis of propriety among the ads for legal services and riding mowers.
Become migratory.
Visit caves that have lost all their bats to white-nose syndrome. Stand at the entrance and listen.
Visit mountaintop-removal sites in the Appalachians that have been terraformed to look like Wyoming.
Wear a cowboy hat and squint.
Become addicted to a tear-flavored brand of chewing tobacco.
Bleed yourself regularly with leeches to remove the black bile.
Follow a river from its mouth to its source: a spring small enough to empty with one long sip.
Plant a stump.

Enfin...'t is klaar

Disturbance in the maze (Fear of flying)

Disturbance in the maze (Fear of flying)

I do not like badly rehearsed repetitions, she said. It's only fear for silence. An eternal longing to create. I stare at the screen, but there's no answer.
I loose myself in the inability to adjust, surrounded by neatly folded steel and glass.
A spurious protective layer of polished chrome.

As she left, a beam of light uncovered the dust, flying away from broken book spines. Too many words dancing and singing around the smoldering fire extinguished by last night.
Shadows of aeroplanes frighten me.

Enfin, 't is klaar...

Manual: How to listen.

How to listen
Just as the tail bone is a vestigial tail, the ears are vestigial cabbages.
Wear a hat to ward off ear worms, which if unchecked can turn into ear butterflies.
Listen with the heart. It’s not really designed for that, but it gets bored just pumping blood all the time.
Listen with your skin: each body hair is an antenna.
Turn on, tune in, drop into a really comfortable couch.
That “still, small voice” is neither God nor conscience but a long-deceased great aunt with a few things still on her mind.
Take notes.
All sound can be heard as music, but not all music can be heard as music.
Your life did, in fact, come with a soundtrack—what have you done with it?
The listener, too, must improvise.
One chord is enough for most purposes—don’t be greedy!
Silence can take four basic forms: pregnant, shocked, utter, and radio.
Pregnant silence is the most tragic, since she always dies giving birth.
Compose in her memory a sonata for the ear trumpet.

Manual: How to wait - How to walk

'It's always seemed kind of a shame that life doesn't come with a manual, so I've decided to write one.'
'My biggest influences on the writing in this series, by the way, are the Serbian poets Vasko Popa and Novica Tadic. That's the level of absurdism I'm trying to mine -- a challenge for my somewhat too-logical mind.'

Terug naar 'That's the level of absurdism I'm trying to mine '

How to wait
Incubate an egg with the heat of your palms. Brood.
Nurse your sorrows with the sour milk of jealousy, or failing that, Nestle’s infant formula.
Dissect a seed.
Relive a pleasant memory by reenacting it in excruciating detail.
Do math problems in your head—for example, prove Goldbach’s Conjecture.
Collect rain in jars, tightly sealed and organized by month and day.
Get ready! Sharpen all your knives.
Grind them until they’re thin as piano wires.
Hug yourself tightly and rock back and forth on your haunches.
If you must watch the clock, unplug it first.
If you must play solitaire, dispense with the cards.
Light cigarettes and watch from a safe distance as they turn into columns of ash.
Pace, but let your fingers do the walking.
Novels are best read backwards, one page at a time.
Stop kidding yourself about what comes next.
Go about your business.
Coil into a spring so your mind won’t have anywhere to wander.

Enfin...'t is klaar

Vanuit 'How te wait' kwam dan redelijk snel 'How to walk'

How to walk
Walking is a form of climbing—one extremity should keep hold of the floor or ground at all times to prevent a fall.
(Feet are better for this than hands.)
You can try delegating it to others, but you have to hope they won’t do the same.
Someone must walk or the earth will forget about us and have other bad dreams instead.
Find a tree to coach you—trees spend their whole lives plotting their next step.
Be careful not to take root.
Every corner of terra firma requires a different walk, as well as every hour of the day.
A morning walk should never take the place of an evening or postprandial walk.
Saunter. Shuffle. Swagger. Stride. Plod.
Feet are like oxen bound in harness: they’re paired, but they’re not a couple.
However much they’re fetishized, their first and only mate is the ground.
Muscles are like batteries—simply walk backwards to recharge!
Try not to think about the ten little piggies with their discordant agendas.
Try not to think about those other two-legged animals, the birds.
At birth, you are allotted just so many steps. Choose them carefully.
Keep your eyes on the sidewalk—there are no dropped coins in the sky.

Aangezien dat Dave ook al 'How to eat', 'How to breathe', 'How to listen' 'How to wake up' schreef, zullen er waarschijnlijk nog wel enkele volgen...

The Road Not Taken

The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Keuzes maken.

Enfin, 't is klaar...

De inschrijvingen en selecties zijn volop aan de gang (duimen!), maar ze hebben dit jaar, naast hun gewone selecties, een extra 'wedstrijd';

"The festival is also for the first time inviting everyone to make a film based on
the poem [meine heimat] ([my home]) by Ulrike Almut Sandig. The directors of
the three best film versions will be invited to Berlin to meet the poet and have
the opportunity to present and discuss their films."

Een fijne uitdaging, me dunkt.

[meine heimat]
© Ulrike Almut Sandig, Streumen, Connewitzer Verlagsbuchhandlung, Leipzig 2007.

[my heimat]
i have forgotten the names of the large birds
each june a brood falls from the ridge of a barn that now stands empty. later in the year they stand stiffly on the fields, from the street the coats curdled white, from a distance
smells of cheap bouquets + steel + possessions
affected by the storm the other day: my heimat in the heimat names break on the soil’s ridge,
in a word: what is raised there i find strange.
Translated by Bradley Schmidt

enfin, 't is klaar
